I feel so embarrassed. This blog is for among other things to rant. We are already a few weeks into Donald Trump’s second term in office, and despite not being American, the effects have been felt here at home already. And yet, I have not ranted. That ends now.
The U.S.president clearly has a hate on for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as do many Canadians, so it would be laughable, if it wasn’t so pathetic, that his number one target to set the world straight is to attack Canada. Apparently we Canadians have treated Americans very badly in trade deals, trade deals orchestrated by Mr. Trump himself during his last term in office. I am not a Trudeau fan, I may have grossly underestimated him. Here is Canada, a small, and weaker player in world politics sitting down with the so called leader of the free world and we seemed to have out negotiated the greatest president the U.S. has ever had. Everybody says so. Way to go Justin! The mouse has defeated the elephant in the room.
So the answer to this is 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods entering the U.S. China is bad too, but they are not as bad as Canada, so they only get 10% tariffs. A huge concern too is the flood of fentanyl streaming in from Canada due to lack border security. This has resulted in tens of millions of deaths according to the White House’s press secretary. That is amazing considering the total number of drug overdose deaths in the US was averaging around 100,000 somewhere. Also, the World Health Organization estimates that less than .1% of fentanyl enters the U.S. from Canada. You can see why attacking Canada would be your first priority as President.
After taunting the Canadian government, in a professional way of course, the President suggested Canada join the US as its 51st state. How respectful. It is so nice to be wanted. The U.S., from coast to coast is made up of 48 states, plus Alaska and Hawaii. Canada is the world’s second largest country by area, and also spans coast to coast. Granted, a huge part of this is poorly inhabited because of arctic conditions, but nevertheless still very diverse. We are broken down into 10 provinces and 3 territories in the north. Atlantic provinces are quite different from prairie provinces or the west coast. But Donny Boy can make it all one state. This again shows the lack of respect Canada is shown. I am not inclined to refer to Americans as our friends. No friend treats another friend the way America has attacked and disrespected Canada. You may still have friends who are American, but as a nation, they are not my friend.
We are not alone in the American crosshairs, an apt comparison for a country obsessed with guns and throwing their military might around. Besides economically attacking Canada, Mexico and China, the Americans have also threatened to take back the Panama Canal, by force if necessary, force Denmark to sell them Greenland, and most recently proposing to take over the Gaza Strip in order to enforce “peace “ in the Middle East.
All of this after less than a month in power. Oh, and on top of this, in an effort to “Make America Great Again”, U.S. aid to other countries is also under attack. I am not sure how you can call yourself the leader of the free world and then say you are only going to focus on what benefits Americans, at least the rich ones. It’s a bit like if you allowed a party to run for federal offices based on a platform of only concerning yourself with one province, or having a federal party that has a goal of separating from the rest of the country. That would be treason. No country would allow that, or would they.
It is impossible not to see the trends and not see glimpses of Nazi Germany prior to WW2. The growing attacks are within as well. Support for underprivileged is being cut, LGBTQ+ is definitely going to be attacked.
What is this world going to look like in 4 year’s time? Will the President’s play to the huge American ego reel in the opposition? All I can say is, “Buy Canadian “.
There, I have ranted and now can move on.
